The drag-and-drive community got a boost of youthful participation, as six competitors in the recent Sick Summer event are under eighteen years-old! And in a climate where it’s easy to get into thousands of other things besides cars or a drag-and-drive, we felt it necessary to highlight some of them here!

It’s easy to stare at a clean 1967 Chevrolet Nova, but Corey Bohl’s Chevy takes that factor up a notch with the cool gasser vibe. Powered by a small block Chevy with a tunnel ram and a pair of Holley carburetors on top, the cool factor increased when Corey slid a manual trans in the transmission tunnel. Could it all survive Sick Summer?

Six days of driving and racing reached the ultimate conclusion last night, as the tenth running of Rocky Mountain Race Week Presented by Sick the Magazine hit the finish line at Tulsa Raceway Park in Oklahoma.

The event would be centered around Alaska Raceway Park, an National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) sanctioned quarter-mile track in Palmer Alaska.

After five days of racing and driving, Rocky Mountain Race Week 1.0 has one final drive today, back to where it all started, Tulsa Raceway Park in Oklahoma for a packed final day of crowning winners and racing action.

Lizzy Musi had announced she was battling the cancer in April of 2023, and stepped away from racing this May to take part in a new treatment in her battle.

The drag-and-drive community can get a harsh reminder that just surviving the week is the top task. Then again, Rocky Mountain Race Week 1.0 is still seeing some competitors clocking insane times, and the index classes continue to be close battle grounds.

July will witness a double dose of Sick the Magazine, as the National Muscle Car Association will host the first of two Sick Shootout classes for the 2024 season, starting with the NMRA / NMCA Power Festival, scheduled for July 18th through the 21st, held at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

To kick off the 2024 Rocky Mountain Race Week, Tulsa Raceway Park hosted 314 vehicles and 12 motorcycles on Sunday. With racing activities completed that evening, the Monday ‘workload’ would be who could survive 350-ish miles from Oklahoma to Texas to stage up on Tuesday for day two of racing, and day three of the week.

Sure the title of this column seems to make no sense and have nothing to do with drag racing, but in truth, it has everything to do with it. We can commonly read about drag-and-drive competitors at the side of the road battling issues; that's par for the course. Unfortunately, we occasionally hear about crashes on the road as well, and one impacted this week's Rocky Mountain Race Week event.

There’s lots of ways to be successful, especially if you take time to develop a solid plan. Granted, plenty of competitors can survive a drag-and-drive with last minute thrashes and no testing. The second major drag-and-drive to hit the scene, Rocky Mountain Race Week, celebrates its tenth year of holding at least one event each year in 2024. The first of two to be held this year, RMRW 1.0 Presented by Sick the Magazine features new tracks, as well as some new competitors, and kicked off Sunday June 23rd.

The 8th stop on the Street Car Takeover event tour of 2024 was held at zMax Dragway in Charlotte, North Carolina. Always a well-attended event in multiple classes, a couple of Sick Week competitors found themselves as the top rides in the popular Street Racer class.

We first reported on Concho Valley Dragway’s concept in April, and just 34 days after ground-breaking, the track surface had been poured in concrete, and the return road, pit area and staging lanes has also been completed in asphalt.

Kevin Schweizer chose a different car for his efforts with a 1980 Mercury wagon, and he also skipped past traditional Ford options, instead landed on one of Ford’s newest engines, the 7.3L Godzilla pushrod engine. This not only allowed him to run the all-Ford NMRA series, including their popular True Street class, but also take part in the Godzilla Invasion special classes at the recent Norwalk event.

A week has passed since Motion Raceworks Sick Summer and my body has almost totally healed while my brain is making steady progress and should be back to forming whole thoughts very soon. Those checkpoint parties really took a toll! But I’m comforted by the words of the great philosopher Lucille Ball, who said: “I’d rather regret the things I have done than regret the things I haven’t done.” Sick Summer 2024 just raised the bar for drag-and-drive checkpoints, and I’m glad to have been amongst it.

One year ago, Travis Larson was riding high after attending the inaugural Sick Summer; compiling an 8.56 average to secure the Street Race 275 class win. But just three months later at a race during Labor Day weekend 2023, things took a turn for the worse.
