Sixes And Setbacks On Wild Day Three Of Midwest Drags
A rollercoaster day at Dragway 42 in Ohio saw spectacular moments and a high level of carnage on the track, as Summit Midwest Drags 2022 entered its penultimate stage.
The first runs of the day seemed jinxed, as racer after racer encountered problems. Corey Bohl’s Chevy Nova gasser was the first into the ‘Carnage Corral’ beside the track when he blew a diff.

Corey was followed by Tyler Garlock, whose stick-shift Mustang broke a control arm, leading to a shredded tire.
Garrett Mitchell was next to be sidelined, when a loose cap on the valve covers saw oil spread through the engine bay.
The fourth incident was the most heartbreaking to see, when Rick Russell’s Lil Red Express Dodge truck got fluid under the tires and hooked right into the concrete wall shortly after launching. Rick was unhurt.
Thankfully things got somewhat smoother from there. After cleaning up the Mullet El Camino, Garrett returned for a 7.01/208mph pass, followed by a crowd-pleasing 6.99/208mph run — his first six-second time slip in drag-and-drive competition. With his average now at 7.385, Garrett now holds all the cards for the overall rankings going into the final day at Edgewater Motorsports Park tomorrow.
Second-placed Ryan Hargett may now be leading, but his Mustang has been seriously impressive this week. Runs of 7.517 and 7.562 took his average to 7.601. While he can’t outrun Garrett, he will be poised to take advantage of any mistake. And we think he may need some bonus points for the burnouts!
With nineteen classes at Summit Midwest Drags, there is plenty of choice for racers. Right now the hottest competition is in Street Machine. After Bill Spangler’s withdrawal, Rob Ambrose’ ’01 Camaro is in prime position, thanks to a 10.106 average. He is closely followed by Colt Rist’s 2004 Impala, on a 10.117 average.
After racing, the field drove around 150 miles to Pro-Filer Cylinder Heads for some car park bench racing, before another 70 miles to the hotel.
Racing for the final day at Edgewater has been brought forward to an 8am start, with weather expected to arrive late in the day.We look forward to bringing you the final results!
