McFarland’s Mullet Moves Into Top Spot At Midwest Drags
The overall lead of Summit Midwest Drags changed hands on day two of the event, as Garrett Mitchell guided the Mullet El Camino to its quickest drag-and-drive passes yet.
In cool conditions at US41 Motorplex, Garrett opened his day with a 7.105/201mph, then returned for a pedal-job 7.3. He and co-pilot Kevin Smith waited for the track to be prepped, before laying down a 7.080/205mph, taking his average to a 7.481 and moving him into the lead of the event.

Day one leader Ryan Hargett had a rushed start to his day, having to get a new tire due to a puncture. He arrived late at the track but made up for it with runs of 7.534 and 7.543 in the Mustang, settling his average at a 7.616. Ryan does not have the same horsepower on tap as Garrett, but drag-and-drive can be decided as much on the road as the track.
Glenn Hunter remained third overall thanks to his best run of the week, a 7.455, and a 7.555, for an average of 7.679.
Most competitors chose to leave US41 early in the day, with a four-and-a-half hour drive to the Callies Crankshafts manufacturing facility back in Ohio - not to mention impending rain. From there it was another hour-and-a-half to the hotels near tomorrow’s venue, Dragway 42. In total there was around 300 miles on the road for most teams.
As per usual there were many stories out there - you’ll just have to make sure you get Sick The Mag to read them all! One of the biggest heartbreakers was the news that William Spangler would be pulling out after a brilliant start to his week. His ’80 Fairmont broke an exhaust rocker mount.
Brandon Doller’s Nova let all the smoke out at half track on one of his runs, but we believe he is in the process of getting a new LS put in at Mid America Kustoms so he can continue the event - that’s dedication!
