Bowers, Eger Lead Early After Hot Start to Carolina Drag Cruise

As temperatures soared into the mid-nineties, Carolina Drag Cruise competitors conquered a hot track at Greer Dragway.

The five-second zone proved elusive for most over the eighth-mile, but three drivers produced slips in that zone. Daniel Bowers is the early outright leader following a 5.478 in his matte black Ford Mustang. Bowers also leads the Limited Street class.

“It was an A to B pass, there was a lot of heat in the track today,” he said. “We pulled some boost out down low but it did well on the big end.”

Bowers was closely followed by Kirk Eger’s 5.509, also representing the Fox body crowd with his small block Ford-powered Mustang.

“That was one of the best passes here (at Greer),” Eger said. “Devin (Vanderhoof) had it turned up to where it needed to be. That was our first pass and our only pass.”

Graham Hayes dipped into the fives at the start of the day in his Chevy pick-up, but a rod knock coming down the return road led him to withdraw very early on to concentrate on his nitrous Chevy Nova instead, which was battling transmission issues.

Unlimited Street saw Scott Thompson set the mark on day one, with a 6.113 out of his big Chevy C10. Larry West’s beautiful Willys is hot on his tail with a 6.260 best so far.

The teams are now heading to Ware Shoals Dragway for day two.
