Will Jacob Davis Make His Mark When Him and His AMC Hit Sick At The Rock, His First Drag and Drive in Over a Year?
In addition to the sense of comradery in the drag and drive community, the thing that we hear more and more is the variety of combinations across the spectrum.
The 2024 edition of Sick Week wasn’t the first drag and drive event Jacob Davis has participated in, but it would mark the first showing for 1972 American Motors Corporation (AMC) Javelin, a previous race-only ride that he converted for Sick Week. Now, a year later, he’s preparing for a Sick At The Rock appearance.
The newest class to the Sick At The Rock event is the Sick Street Car Challenge class - $32,000 in payouts are up for grabs!! This two-day drag and drive format class is now open to 200 lucky competitors, and you don’t necessarily need to be the quickest overall either, as we have 32 different categories to award $1,000 in, and we’ve come up with some good ones to give every competitor a shot at some money. It all takes place at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina April 10th - 12th, 2025! For more details on Sick At The Rock, and the over $50K in payouts, CLICK HERE!
“We bought it in the winter of 2022 in Wisconsin after finding an ad posted for it in an AMC Facebook group,” said Jacob. After going through the car to feel comfortable enough to put it on the race track, Jacob and Tim debuted it for the first time over the summer of 2023, with a best of 10.6 at 128.9 miles per hour naturally aspirated. “But there’s definitely way more in it.”
The tube chassis roller stays true to the AMC brand, packing an AMC 401 cubic inch base engine, bored and stroked to 431 cubes for a final total. Run naturally aspirated, it’s mated up to a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic with a transbrake.
They found that the car would give them some fits during last year’s Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive, but Jacob persevered and finished the event with an 11.06 average, bolstered by a best pass of 10.80 at 124.97 mph on day three.
Since then, Jacob has stepped back from the drag and drive game a little. But we will see the multi-colored AMC Javelin back in action in North Carolina next month, when Jacob comes to participate in the new Sick Street Car Challenge class.
“I’m really excited to see Sick The Mag stepping up to save some of these races and adding their own flare to it with a fun, weekend style drag and drive,” Jacob said. “It requires a lot less commitment of your time and investment of resources to enter a shorter event like this, and I’m actually doing it for my ‘bachelor party’ with some of my groomsmen.”
Yes, you read that right. Less than a month after the completion of Sick Week 2024, proposed to his fiancé Sophia Kirchoff. Now, it almost seems fitting that close to his wedding date, Jacob will once again bring the drag and drive game back into play. “I get married two weeks after the event,” said Jacob.
After securing the Quickest AMC award at Sick Week, is Jacob hoping for a repeat and some honeymoon funds at Sick At The Rock? “I’ve got a real shot at quickest AMC again which could mostly pay for the race for me,” he said.
