What Broke and What Survived? Tearing Down a Sick Week-Winning 2500-Plus Horsepower Coyote Build
When your previous street car has clicked off 6.90s at over 200 mph and you want to move to the next level, you have three choices. Lighter weight, more power, or both.
Brett LaSala went for both, and has since been a threat to win at most any race he attends, including the recent TX2K event.
To push the 2012 Ford Mustang to class-winning times, LaSala turned to Fast Forward Racing Engines (FFRE).
The stage 4 Coyote Ford build is a new one for FFRE, and is based on a GT500 short block. A Boss crankshaft, MGP aluminum connecting rods and Manley pistons are some of the upgrades, and a pair of Precision turbochargers provides additional atmosphere.

Making an impressive 2506 horsepower on a hub dyno, LaSala clicked off a best of 6.52 at 212 mph on his way to a 6.74 average in winning the 2023 Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive event.
Both the individual run and the average stand as the quickest ever on a drag radial on a drag-and-drive event.
Just one week after Sick Week was complete, LaSala was testing the car and heard some strange noise from the engine. Instead of risking it with TX2K less than a month away, LaSala pulled the engine and paid a visit to FFRE.
There, he was joined by Jay Meagher of Real Street Performance and Joe Irwin of Fast Forward Race Engines, and the engine was torn down to discover what had survived over 50 track runs and 1000 miles of street abuse.
That Racing Channel (TRC) covered the results, and uploaded them to YouTube below:
