A Clean Classic Mustang Fastback Packs a Mean 8-Second Punch

Although a good share of the Mustangs seen on drag-and-drive events are Fox platforms (1979-1993 models), as a good chunk of 2010-newer models, they are still some 1964-1973 classics that show up from time to time.

It provides a look into the pony car’s first few designs, and a look into inspiration for some of the more-current models. And when the examples are quick and clean, it makes it easier to want to know more.

This particular 1970 Mustang fastback carries all the factory cues and character lines, plus a Boss 429 hood scoop, big tires out back and a parachute for slowing down from the 8-second blasts it records on Hot Rod Drag Week.

Jason Neshiem owns this clean example, and he plans to return to Drag Week for a fourth time in 2024, hoping to duplicate or better his second-place finish from 2021.

To get the 8-second time slips in a ’70 Mustang requires some grunt, and Jason employs a 427 cubic inch small-block Ford combination. The pump gas monster adds some extra spice when Jason arms the nitrous, and a Turbo 400 transmission make sure all the ponies go to those previously-mentioned big meaty tires out back.

In 2023, Jason was in route to his best average ever at Hot Rod Drag Week, but ended up on the sidelines after day four. “We broke an intake rocker on the road,” he said. “We were within 3 miles of the last check point; Broke another one. No more spares. 20 miles from our last hotel.”

This was after posting three personal best passes, the quickest and fastest being an 8.53 at 158 mph on day four.

But despite the Did Not Finish, Jason was still in good spirits. “But what a blast,” said Jason. “Car ran flawlessly till that point. We see some absolutely stunning scenery and amazing tracks. Got to hang with some of the bestest friends you could ask for, and made so many more memories.”
