The Drive for Five – Can a 1967 Chevelle Continue a Storied Win Streak?

Although many participants will tell you just competing / finishing in a drag-and-drive is enough for them, it’s hard to not focus a little on class winners.

In the case of Corey Thompson, a former multi-time winner on Rocky Mountain Race Week (RMRW), he gets attention for a multitude of reasons.

A beautiful 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle is just the beginning, as Corey’s Chevy carries all the right trim and lines to shock some with its 7-second performances.

And coming into the 2023 season, Corey had accumulated three class wins in three appearances on RMRW 1.0 for a perfect record.

Under the care of Corey for nearly a decade, the classic Chevy has been the subject of a transplant from naturally-aspirated big block power to a twin-turbocharged LS for motivation.

After a year with the LS in place, Corey battled the existing air ride suspension, and eventually ended it with a broken engine and some mid 9-second passes.

Fast forward to June 2023, and Corey had attended a trio of RMRW events to this point, walking away with a class win at each one for a perfect win-to-attendance ratio.

In June of 2023, Corey participated in Sick Summer Presented by TBM Brakes. And through he had to battle through some parts issues, as well as some self-inflicted injuries, Corey got the job done with a 7.87 average good enough to claim the Super Street class win.

Just two weeks later, Corey returned to RMRW 1.0 with son Logan for a chance to pick-up his fourth RMRW class win.

After 1200 street miles, an incident on the road with the rear suspension, and numerous drag strip passes, Corey would complete the week with an 8.08 average for the class win, his fourth RMRW Hot Rod class win and fifth drag-and-drive class win in as many events.

More details and full event coverage will be in our Sick the Mag Summer issue.
