Tales From Death Week – Following the Route, While Making Your Own Path, Is How This Monte Carlo Survived Death Week

Drag-and-drive events can bring out some unique rides, and showcase the grit and determination competitors employ to make it to the next gas station, the next track, or even complete the week when things look grim.

For Nebraska’s own Brock Dvorak, his experience on Death Week started with a trip to Arizona that nearly kept him from making it to the starting line for day one.

“Drove a slow 1300 miles with a tow vehicle we had to limp,” said Brock. “Got to Phoenix, and the car managed to run a 7.6-second result on its second pass, which I am very fine with for 4 pounds of boost.”

Following a pair of 7.7-second passes at the Barona and Famoso track stops, Brock changed his route and reflected on his time in California.

“Decided to take the long route from Famoso to Vegas and go through Death Valley,” he said. “Joined the Nebraska squad and had a blast almost getting stuck on a gravel / sand road, because I saw a ghost town, I thought would be fun to go to.

Officially made it into and out of California with not even a pull over or minor ticket, which is amazing. Ran out of gas right at the Nevada border, had some e85 so we were able to get to the next station.

Got to the Vegas Strip, and made some noise which was very appreciated by the tourists.”

Just a few days later, Brock returned to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, where he clocked his best pass of the event, 7.44 at 91 mph, to compile a 7.64 average and earn the ’86 Monte Carlo a top twenty result. “It was an amazing result to those nine days,” Brock said during the Skull ceremony. “No crackheads asked me for money, so that’s always a plus.”

Just one day after Death Week was complete, Brock reflected on his success in completing the event. “I had a fan fuse pop and push some coolant, a few leaks, and a sway bar link popped off,” Brock said. “So, nothing more than a 10-minute fix.” He also hinted we might see him back for Sick 66 in 2024.
