Sick Week 2022 In Review: Back to Bradenton Motorsports Park for the Final Day

Day five on a drag-and-drive typically takes you back to the starting point of the week. Thus, the pack of Sick Week and Sick Ward participants pointed their rides southwest to Bradenton Motorsports Park for the final day of Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive in 2022.

The drive from South Georgia Motorsports Park to Bradenton, Florida was a long one, but the Sick Week staff planned it out to give participants options and a little more time.

First, the halfway point of the drive was “Big Daddy” Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum, and they opened their doors later than normal for participants to enjoy a Thursday evening of Sick Week family and drag racing history.

Second, racing action was scheduled to start at Bradenton Motorsports Park around 2 p.m., giving participants more time to complete the drive south.

Once action got started on track, some competitors opened with easy “A to B” passes to officially complete Sick Week. Then, the gloves came off and the final battles got under way!

The Unlimited class was led by Stefan Gustafsson from the start, and he had clocked 6-second passes at every stop thus far. But Nick Taylor stepped up with his first 6-second pass at South Georgia Motorsports Park, putting the pressure back on Gustafsson. But the Corvette driver from Sweden left Nick no chance, posting a best-of-the-week 6.53 at 217 mph to lock up the Unlimited class title.

After taking the class lead from Steve Morris on day four, Shawn Fink locked up the Unlimited Iron class win with a 7.19 at 166 mph pass.

Rick Prospero and Mikael Borggren continued to battle in the Modified class, and both once again delivered 6-second passes on drag radials. On the final day, Prospero nailed his best pass of the week via a 6.84 at 208 mph to Borggren’s 6.94 at 209, giving Prospero the class victory.

Incoming Pro Street class leader Glenn Hunter clocked his second-straight 7.3-second pass to lock up the class title.

With over 30 rides in the Stick Shift class, it was a battle right to the end, but Canadian Richard Guido would rule the roost with his ’65 Pontiac GTO.

Doc McEntire would sit atop a big class of Naturally Aspirated rides, clocking his second 7-second pass of the week for the victory.

Team Lujan friends William Lujan and Alex Corella would pick up the hotly-contested 275 Street Race and Street Race class wins.

Matt Lamphier and his unique Mazda Miata edged out a tough field of racers for the Outlaw 235 Street Race title.

Tony Niemczyk and his 1995 Mitsubishi clicked his bast pass of the week at 9.03 at 151 mph to grab the Freaks title.

Jarrad Scott won the Gasser vs Hot Rods vs Beetles title, Bill Spangler picked up the victory in the Pro Dial-Your-Own (DYO) class, and Jackson DeVaughan would lock up the title in the DYO class.
