Roy Hill Chews Out ‘Dirty Jobs’ Star Mike Rowe During Dragster Experience

It’s fair to say Mike Rowe has done a lot of jobs that most people either would never do, or couldn’t do.

The man at the forefront of the former ‘Dirty Jobs’ TV show on the Discovery channel has also taken up another project: the ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It with Mike Rowe’ show, and in this episode, Rowe gets down to business of learning to drag race.

Mike Rowe, who has done everything from clean trash out of rivers in Indiana to stopping fighter jets on an aircraft carrier, once had a program in San Francisco, California about folks with a mission in life under the same ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ title.

Devoted do-gooders, mad scientists, eccentric collectors were just a few of the people Rowe focused on. Now with ‘Dirty Jobs’ in his rearview mirror, Rowe decided the ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ idea deserved another shot, crossing the country to find people that “do what they do because of a weird mix of love, compulsion, obsession, dedication -- whatever it is,” Rowe said. “Those people have always interested me.”

On this episode, Rowe decides to take up the art of drag racing in North Carolina with Roy Hill of Roy Hill’s Drag Racing School. Hill, a former National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) pro stock racer, now focuses his efforts on teaching people to race.

Everything from entry level bracket racing, to Junior Dragsters and Junior Street for kids, as well as more advanced classes like Super Comp, Top Sportsman, and even Stock and Super Stock is available at Hill’s school.

Hill is tasked with teaching Rowe how to drag race, and there are some moments of disagreement. But in the process of Rowe piloting both a stock Mustang and a 1,000-horsepower dragster, Rowe ultimately takes some tough criticism, make some quick runs, and creates an interesting end to the day.
