Postal Power! LS-Swapped, Nitrous Fed Post Jeep Shooting for Nines!

Some families pass down jewelry, coin collections or even land or a house. In the case of this 1974 DJ5 Postal Jeep, it was passed to Cody Green as an inheritance from his grandpa. “He owned the Jeep for 20 years,” said Cody. “He passed away two years ago and I inherited it and living on his legacy in it.”

Why a Postal Jeep? “He just thought it would be something different from everything else,” said Cody. “The wing on the Jeep he found in a field, and made my grandma climb through a barbwire fence and get it. To our surprise fit perfectly on top of the Jeep.”

The Jeep not only provided enjoyment for his grandpa, but for Cody as well, even before he got behind the wheel. “I've always loved racing since the day he got me into it,” Cody said. “But it's a lot more enjoyable doing it with the Jeep, because it feels like he's right there with me when I'm piloting the Jeep and watching over me.”

When the Jeep came into Cody’s care, it was packing a Gen 1 small block Chevrolet to the tune of 383 cubic inches. The small block was backed by a Turbo 350 3-speed automatic transmission, a Ford 9-inch rear end with 3.50 ratio gear set and a limited slip.

And while Cody agreed on the smaller displacement engine platform, he skipped ahead a couple generations in the GM family, switching to a 5.3-liter LS. “They are everywhere, and easy to get parts for if something ever happened while out on a drag-and-drive event or at a race track,” Cody said about the reason for the switch.

With his grandpa watching over him, and his wife Sierra by his side, Cody was able to compete in his first drag-and-drive event. “My goal for 2023 was to complete a Rocky Mountain Race Week event,” said Cody. “I did, and it also was my first ever event and plan on completing more in the future.”

With his first event in the books with a 13.56 average for the week, Cody already has plans to make the Postal Jeep into an express mailer. “I recently added nitrous to the Jeep, and now Nitrous Outlet has come on as a sponsor,” said Cody. “So, I’m hoping to run a low 10 second pass to high 9-second in it if we can.”

Eventually Cody plans to go add a pair of turbochargers with the nitrous, and make an 8 second pass. “Future plans also include a Mustang 2 front end with coil-overs for better drivability, and an 8.50 cert chromoly cage to be class legal,” said Cody.

And with his wife’s support, Cody won’t be the only one racing. “My wife is getting to race my turbo LS C1500 pick up,” he said. “She already told me it's hers since I started racing the Jeep, so she's ready to line up with me when I get them both finished and beat me.”
