Mikael Borggren and His 6-Second Volvo Wagon Hoping to Contend for a Second Drag-and-Drive Win

At one point station wagons might have seen unpopular to some, but thanks to examples like Mikael Borggren’s Volvo, that opinion has started to change. This Swede ripping out the original engine, and opting for a built LS with a big single turbocharger might have helped.

Mikael made his first appearance on Hot Rod Drag Week in 2018, and finished fifth in the Modified Power Adder class with a 9.51 average. One year later, Mikael dropped his best pass to an 8.44, but was out after the first day.

In 2021, the wagon had once made a huge performance leap, winning the Modified Power Adder class with a 7.25 average, plus Mikael clocked a 6.93 at 203 mph pass on the final day.

Sick Week 2023 Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive will feature hundreds of America’s fastest street cars, racing and cruising through Florida and southern Georgia.

Sick Ward tickets / Individual day spectator tickets are available here.

The 2022 season had Mikael making the trip to Florida for Sick Week, where he tangled in a great battle for the Modified class title with Rick Prospero. The two drivers traded 6-second passes throughout the week, and the final results showed Rick with an 6.88 average for the title, and Mikael with a 6.91 average with a best of 6.85 at 207 mph for the second spot.

Mikael backed up that finish at Hot Rod Drag Week with a third-place result in the Modified Power Adder class, with a best pass of 7.04 at 202 mph.

Earlier this week as Mikael prepared for Sick Week 2023, the engine had some issues on the dyno, necessitating the engine getting stripped apart. Borggren is scrambling to find replacement parts, but still remains optimistic on getting everything fixed in time to battle for another Modified class win.
