Love at First Sight Evolves into a Potential 6-Second Monte Carlo
While riding in the family car with his father, an 11-year-old Alan Whitaker sees a first generation (1970-1972) Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He asks his dad “what kind of car is that?” Once he got the Monte Carlo answer, Alan never got it out of his head. “At that point, I knew I’d own one,” he said. “From the age 15 onward, I went everywhere looking for one.”
That fire that fueled the search for the perfect Monte Carlo as his first car burned bright, and one day he found his unicorn. “I found one on a car lot while a school bus, and I made the bus driver stop so I could go look at it,” said Alan.
A couple days later, his dad had made the purchase, waking Alan up on a Saturday morning by revving the Monte Carlo’s engine outside his window. That special day was in 1986 when Alan was 16 years old, and 38 years later, he still has that 1972 Monte Carlo.

At a quick glance, it’s easy to see the Monte Carlo has a mean all-business look. The parachutes, the big tires, the fender-exit exhaust.
But the factory green hue, all the chrome and aluminum factory trimmings and polished everything make you stop and wonder if it’s a solid show ride.
Make no mistake about it, this car’s latest chapter is all about show AND go, as Alan sets his sights his first serious test of the Monte at Hot Rod Drag Week, less than three weeks away.
We got to see the car in person at last weekend’s National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) All-American Nationals, held last weekend at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
After making some shake-down runs in testing, Alan would get to see how the Steve Morris Engines-built 572 SMX wearing Precision Pro Mod 94-millimeter turbochargers would hold up in some exhibition competition with Tom Bailey’s recently-completed Durango. A 4.74 at 160 mph on the eighth-mile standard was the best pass.
A full feature on Alan’s ride will be upcoming in the next print issue of Sick the Magazine.
