This ’69 Camaro is our eighth vehicle to give away since we started with the first giveaway in early 2023. It was on display during our recent Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive, and the car was the inspiration for the newest look for Tom Bailey’s 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, the ‘Sick Seconds 2.0.”
“After owning this classic for over 20 years, I felt it was time for one of our Sick supporters to enjoy it,” said Tom. “It’s a great car, and although I’ll miss it, it’s good to know that someone will get to enjoy it.”
Similar to the other Indy Pace Cars, the car manufacturer builds 2-3 vehicles for use during the Indianapolis 500 race, traditionally held over Memorial Day weekend, usually the last weekend of May. Typically, the manufacturer also builds a number of replica Pace Cars that match the actual Pace Cars used during the race, but the replicas normally don’t see official pace duties.
1969 marked the second year of the Camaro being selected for Pace Car duties an Indianapolis, and Chevrolet pulled out the stops to give it great visual appeal, as well as some great options.
This Camaro is 1 of the 3,675 Camaro convertible models originally built with the Z11 code "Indy Sport Convertible" designation. The Pace Car models included:
- Rally Sport / Super Sport option packages.
- ‘Air Induction’ (or commonly known as ‘Cowl Induction’) steel hood.
- Front and rear spoilers.
- 'Rally' steel wheels.
- Posi-traction rear end.
- Exterior finished in Dover White with Hugger Orange stripes on the hood and trunk lid areas.
- ‘Chevrolet Camaro - Official Pace Car – 53rd ANNUAL INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE – MAY 30, 1969’ door decals.
- Deluxe Orange Houndstooth interior with center console and floor shifter.
Some Indy Pace Cars could come with several engine choices, and this one sports the base 8-cylinder, a 350 cubic inch small block engine, rated at 300 horsepower.
Coupled to a 3-speed automatic transmission, Sick the Mag teamed up with Gear Vendors Overdrive to add a Gear Vendors and another gear to allow the Camaro to cruise even better. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Tom said. “I appreciate Rick Johnson jumping into this giveaway, and it makes driving this car a dream.”
This example also features: Power Steering, Power Brakes, Tilt Steering Column, as well as Heat and Defrost.
