Did This Coyote Make More Power Than Jeff Lutz?

We’ve covered the accomplishments of Brett LaSala and his ‘Snot Rocket 2.0’ in 2023, and it was a lot to cover.

At his first drag-and-drive with the car, he not only won Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive, but laid down the quickest single pass, a 6.52 on day one, as well as the quickest average, 6.74, for a drag radial-equipped car.

But this would be just the tip of the iceberg for what Brett accomplished in 2023, and towards the end of the year, the 2012 Mustang raised some eyebrows in November when Brett and the Real Street group laid down a 4.09 at 184.80 mph pass on the eighth-mile format during a private test session at Orlando ‘Sick’ World Dragway. How much power is needed to lay down these kinds of numbers?

A previous dyno session in December 2022 found the Snot Rocket putting out 2506 horsepower on a hub dyno, with the Precision Turbo and Engine twin turbochargers creating 47 pounds of boost.

The engine platform, assembled by Fast Forward Race Engines (FFRE), has gotten a lot of attention for the factory Ford part is still employs. The build is based around a sleeved Ford factory Predator block, and employs a Ford factory Coyote crankshaft, and factory cylinder heads (that have been worked on by FFRE).

Manley custom pistons, MGP aluminum connecting rods, Comp custom camshafts and a Plazmaman intake complete the engine package, and a pair of Precision 76/80 Next Gen R turbos provided the boost at that 2022 dyno session.

But as we mentioned above, Brett, Jim Braun and Real Street continued to push the power envelope, chasing better time slips and race wins in 2023. By November of 2023, they were laying down personal best numbers, with the Snot Rocket now sporting a pair of Precision 83/85-millimeter Next Gen R turbochargers. But they also discovered the factory Ford crankshaft was flexing, causing some main bearing wear.

Brett and team wanted to send the storied engine out on a high note, so with a fresh set of bearings installed, and with less than a month remaining before Sick Week 2024 got underway, the Snot Rocket Mustang went on the hub dyno at Blacklist Performance.

The team would use this data to help tune up a fresh duplicate engine they had built for Sick Week 2024, featuring an upgrade to a billet crankshaft. With Job Spetter on hand to assist with the tune up, the Real Street team set out to see how far they could push the horsepower envelope.

The team continued to turn up the boost and make pulls, even trying an intake change. After ten runs were in the books, they called it a day, with a dyno sheet reading a maximum 2,930 horsepower at 8510 rpm and 1858 pound feet of torque at 8048 rpm.

With the duplicate fresh engine swapped in, backed by a close-ratio M & M Transmission Turbo 400 and a ProTorque converter, Brett and Jim rolled into Sick Week 2024, where Brett would reset his own record for the quickest single pass for a drag radial-equipped car FOUR TIMES during the week, culminating in a 6.263 at 227 mph on the final day at Orlando ‘Sick’ World Dragway.

Brett also dropped the quickest average for a drag radial-equipped car down to a 6.34, four tenths of-a-second better than his performance in 2023.
