Bracket Racing Veteran Darcy MacCoubrey Preps for First Drag-and-Drive Event

As the drag-and-drive community continues to expand with new venues and events, it’s becoming more common to see enthusiasts convert class and bracket cars to adapt for street and strip duty.

Darcy MacCoubrey might have a long history as a bracket racer, but the 2023 edition of Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive will be his first-ever drag-and-drive event.

“I've been following drag-and-drive events for 10 years or more and have always wanted to do one,” he said. “I ran into a guy that did Hot Rod Drag Week this year at a local cruise and told him I always wanted to try it. He said that I needed to just join because I'd never be ready and not getting any younger.”

As a bracket racer, is almost seems natural for Darcy to enter the Dial Your Own (DYO) class at Sick Week. He will do so with a 1975 Dodge Dart Sport, which is not his normal bracket race car.

“The plan is to get my feet wet in drag-and-drive events with the slower Dart, and then come home and get the truck prepared for an event,” Darcy said, as he has a Dodge Lil Red Express Truck that he normally races.

“My real goal is to complete the event with the truck someday. I would have liked to had Dad as a co-pilot, but he would have thought the whole thing was nuts.”

Darcy’s wife Amanda will join him on Sick Week, and she comes from a racing background as well.

“We met at the Drag strip when we were both 16,” said Darcy. “Her father was racing when my father happened to pit next to him one weekend. Other than my father, there is no one I'd rather be doing this with then her.”

Darcy will make the long tow from Canada to participate on his first drag-and-drive, and he listed a multitude of reason why he chose Sick Week.

“The distance from track to track seems much more relaxed than some other events, and I know every track is top notch,” Darcy admitted. “All four are definitely in the top 10 drag strips in the United States. Just to say I made passes at Gainesville and SGMP is pretty cool, but I have to get there first.”
