Bob Gruber Goes Anti-LS With His Mustang, Choosing Old School Ford Pushrod Power

The LS-swap is becoming more commonplace every year, as is the Ford-based Coyote. But some still prefer the old school engines, and Bob Gruber bucks the engine swap trend with his clean 1994 Ford Mustang.

An occasional test and tune racer, Gruber took the plunge into drag-and-drive in 2022, with his first event being Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive.

The ’94 Mustang relies on 360 cubic inches of small block Ford, with additional air provided by a ProCharger supercharger. Backing the blue oval engine is a T-56 manual transmission.

Gruber ran in the Stick Shift class in 2022, posting a best pass of 10.84 at 138 mph, and ending the week with an 11.19 average and just outside the top ten out of 32 cars in the class.

Gruber plans to return to Sick Week with new goals. “My goal is to average sub-2 second 60 foots,” he said. “And average nine-seconds, and also finish of course.”
