Bailey Wins His Sixth Drag Week, Goldstone Sets Ultimate Iron Record

Hot Rod Drag Week’s five days of automotive torture are complete, with the overall result going down to the wire at Darlington Dragway.

Bryant Goldstone had closed the margin to Tom Bailey significantly over Wednesday and Thursday, but the realistic scenario was that Bailey needed to make a mistake for Goldstone to move ahead in the overall rankings.

As the quick cars got on to the track, Goldstone and Bailey would arrive in the staging lanes together to make their runs. Goldstone went first and unloaded a new personal best 6.569 at 218.66mph, the fastest speed of Drag Week. To keep his lead, Bailey needed to run 6.84 or better and he did just that with a front end-carrying 6.704.

Goldstone came back for a second run but could only hit a 6.6, with the transmission suspected to be a bit tired. And with that, Goldstone shook Bailey’s hand and the overall winner was decided.

Bailey’s final average of 6.714 came home just ahead of Goldstone’s 6.743. It was Bailey’s sixth Drag Week win and it came on the tenth anniversary of his first, with the very same car he raced this week. For Goldstone’s troubles, he did get the win in Ultimate Iron.

Devin Vanderhoof and Josh Davis completed their first Drag Week and landed third overall, as well as the Modified victory. Their average of 7.091 was helped thanks to a flying 6.836/204mph at Darlington, their quickest run of the week.

There were plenty of stories throughout the 280+ racers to compete during Drag Week. We will be carrying much more in our magazine report, but here’s our brief wrap from today.

Evan Uerkwitz earned his first Drag Week win with a Pro Street Power Adder average of 8.254. He was joined in the winner’s circle by Pro Street NA champion Andrew Starr, whose ’56 Chevy rumbled to an average of 9.639.

Super Street Big Block Power Adder saw Clyde Carlson bring home the trophy, while Super Street Small Block Power Adder was dominated by Ryan Hargett. The Coyote-powered Mustang flew to an average of 7.291, a new class record.

Michael Remines was the sole competitor to finish Drag Week in the All Motor Big Block class. The Mustang had an average of 8.681. In All Motor Small Block, Jason Tabscott fed his Camaro just enough valve springs to get through the week, finishing with an 8.780 average.

Across the Street Race classes, winners included Randy Belehar (Big Block Power Adder, 8.589 average) and Jeff Sias (Small Block NA, 9.754 average).

There were several historic notes from the 8.50 racers, with Curt Johnson earning an amazing Drag Week title in Street Race Big Block NA, as Dustin Trance set the Street Race Small Block Power Adder world on fire courtesy of an amazing 8.504 average — another feat we will have much more on in the magazine.

Wayne Baker took out Gasser A with a 9.055 average, while Gasser B arrived in James Jarvis’ hands with a 10.0004 average. Mark Fisher took out Hot Rod with an impressive 9.149 average.

That’s about as brief as we can keep the results for now, but once again, please make sure you are subscribed to Sick The Magazine so you can read our full Drag Week report, with all of the stories from behind the scenes.
