Twin Turbo Street Legal Mustang Blasts a 6.45 at 215 MPH during FL2K at Bradenton Motorsports Park

One of the premiere events in racing each year is FL2K, held annually at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Known for great traction and record-setting performances, a drag-and-drive competitor has blasted a new personal best during qualifying on Friday.

Brett LaSala, who captured the Modified class win at this year’s Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive with a 6.74 average, rolled into FL2K sporting a new pair of Precision Turbo Next Gen 80-millimeter turbochargers on his 2012 Ford Mustang, Snot Rocket.

He put them to good use, as during the third qualifying session on Friday night, Brett scorched Bradenton Motorsports Park’s surface for a 6.451 at 215.65 mph, his new personal best and good enough for the top qualifying spot.

But the good news came with some bad, as Brett noticed some low oil pressure in high gear. “We pulled the filter and found bearing material. Everyone sprang into action, and within 30 minutes we had the plan in place,” said Brett.

Fellow drag-and-drive competitor Garrett Mitchell (a.k.a. Cleetus McFarland) offered up the use of his shop just minutes away, and the team got into it. “He pushed us over to his shop where Jay (from Real Street Performance), Joe Irwin and I removed the engine,” said Brett. “We brought it to Fast Forward Race Engines shop where my new short block was waiting to be changed after this event.

We stripped the old engine, and got everything cleaned and swapped to the new short block. AJ Hoffman and Robert Cossack killed it!”

Their suspicions were confirmed when the engine came apart: the factory Ford crankshaft was flexing / bending, which caused the center main to touch down and chew the bearing. “We will do a full investigation tear down after the event,” Brett said.

They got the engine back together, fired it at 2 a.m. and drove the car back to the track, and will go into battle today in the Extreme 28s versus Tres Cuarto class for a $10,000 winner payout.
