Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indiana Getting a New Tower, More Upgrades Rumored to Be Coming

Heralded as one of the most important tracks to win at on the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) event tour, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park is getting some upgrades as the 2024 calendar year is just getting started.

Demolition of the tower that sits on the right side of the track began in the last two days, and the rumor mill is it will just be the beginning of the upgrades that track will see. The tower had been in position since 1983.

Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park is one of two tracks the NHRA owns, the other being Gainesville Raceway. Both tracks have seen use for many successful events, including the drag-and-drive community visiting each one.

Indy has seen dates from both Hot Rod Drag Week and the Midwest Drags, while Gainesville Raceway will again be a stop on Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive.

Indianapolis Raceway Park first opened in 1960, and hosted the first NHRA U.S. Nationals in 1961. It has been widely held as the “grand-daddy” of NHRA’s national events, and winning an NHRA Wally trophy for class means as much to most as a national championship.

NHRA purchased the facility in 1979, and the four-story Parks tower, named after NHRA founder Wally Parks, was one of the first big improvements the NHRA made to the facility.
