Last Year’s Burnout Contest Winner Steps Up His Game to Smoke This Year’s Competition at Sick Powerfest!

Just in case you thought last year’s burnout contest winner Patrick Corcoran was resting on his laurels, think again.

“I know they got some big guns coming this year, but I’m going to get out there and put on a damn show,” Patrick said.

A fourth-generation mechanic who got his smarts working at the family auto business, Patrick wasn’t seriously thinking about burnouts until Tom Bailey announced Sick Nights in 2022.

“Tom’s deal last year generated a lot of smack talk, and I figured I’d better get something ready,” Patrick said.

That something would be this one-owner, but well worn, Chevrolet pick-up he picked up off a Craigslist ad a few years ago. “I bought it from a guy who looked like he had drug a mailbox all the way down one side of it,” Patrick laughed.

The base model 6-cylinder truck didn’t do burnouts, so Patrick started thinking of ideas. “I figured everyone does the LS-swap route, so why not jump on board,” he said. He came across a great deal on a 6-liter iron block LS and 4L80E overdrive transmission.

“I rebuilt it over a period of about six months, watching YouTube videos and doing the normal upgrades,” Patrick said. After thrashing it at a local race track a couple times, he turned to getting his burnout game strong.

“I had never done a burnout contest like Tom Bailey’s (Sick Nights 2022) before,” said Patrick.

“I was always the guy that got flack at local shows trying to do one, so I was super excited to participate in Sick Nights last year. Just getting to drive the truck on the grounds at M1 Concourse was awesome; anything after that was just icing on the cake.”

That icing turned out to be plentiful, as Patrick picked up the win and the big check. “Thankfully I went out there, didn’t blow up anything, and when it was all over, I put on a new set of tires and drove it home,” he said.

“It seems I go through two to three sets of tires every year on this truck,” Patrick said. “I keep having fun with it, and I keep trying to break it.”

After winning the title in 2022 naturally aspirated, Patrick figured it was time to step up his game to defend his title this year with a little boost.

“I built a homemade turbo kit for it,” said Patrick of his new addition. “Everyone makes it look so easy on the internet. So, I fired up the chopsaw and Sawzall and got it done.”

The turbocharger is a 70/84-millimeter that Patrick says matches the specs on a John Deere tractor, and he hopes it’ll be enough.

“I’m getting the truck ready to put on a bigger show this year,” he said. “I got butterflies about it all, and I can’t wait.”

Helping make that effort possible is Southfield Muffler and Brake, allowing Patrick to work on getting the truck ready, as well as good friend Rony Frost for all his help, and his babygirl Theadora.

“I’m coming to kill the tires; I want them to come off the rims just like before,” said Patrick of his intentions at Summit Sick Powerfest. “That bulls-eye might be on me since I won last year, but I’m going into the event with even more enrgy.”
