GALLERY & REPORT: Day One of Sick Summer Presented By TBM Brakes

Sick Summer Presented By TBM Brakes saw the party commence with six-second fanfare as competition began in earnest for the latest event to hit the drag and drive scene.

Kicking off his week near perfectly was Steve Morris, whose Boostmaster wagon punched out a 6.663/213mph to lead the overall rankings and the Ultimate class. Not as lucky on the day was Steve’s son Kyle, who had to withdraw from competition due to an engine issue.

Bryant Goldstone made a tire-shaking first pass but turned his day around with a solid 6.680/217mph to lead Unlimited Iron and hold second overall.

Third overall after day one was Alex Taylor thanks to a personal best 6.816 at 208mph. With her one-and-done in the bag, Taylor was on the road early.

Joshua Davis, driving Devin Vanderhoof’s Ford Mustang, was the quickest of the radial gang after a 6.866 at 208mph in the middle of the day, backing up an earlier 7.00 run.

A conservative 6.926 put Garrett Mitchell fifth on the overall board and in the lead of Modified, though a later attempt to improve saw tire spin for the Mullet El Camino.

Perhaps the most astonishing run of the day came from Ed Ensor, who set a new record for a naturally aspirated car in drag and drive competition with an incredible 7.490 at 182mph.

Other leaders included Australian John Faraone with a 7.863 run in Pro Street that got very loose at the top end, while Corey Thompson’s heavyweight Chevelle leads Super Street with a 7.750.

Stick Shift is a battle between Tyler Garlock and Bryan Crane with 8.753 and 8.782 runs respectively, while Rob Courtney leads the Sick Week Freaks thanks to a 9.111 from his front wheel drive Honda.

Andy Cook leads a small Rowdy Radial field with a 5.238 and Troy Martin is on top of Gassers vs Hot Rods vs Beetles with a 9.174. Travis Larson’s near perfect 8.508 holds sway in Street Race 275 while an 8.512 by Cameron Alley leads Sick Street Race.

While the opening day of Sick Summer saw nowhere near the carnage of Sick Week, there was still some mechanical mayhem taking place. Bill Schwarz replaced an engine overnight after spying a not-so-straight crank in his Chevelle, making it back to the track just in time.

Most racers made it into the road miles however, and they were treated to a relatively short drive through Rock Falls to the first and only checkpoint by the Rock River. The vibe was great as racers relaxed and spoke to curious locals.

Of course, for all the in-depth stories from the week you will have to read all about Sick Summer Presented By TBM Brakes in the next Sick The Mag!

Day two of competition takes place at Byron Dragway, before the circus moves on to Great Lakes Dragaway on Wednesday, Tri-State Raceway on Thursday and back to Cordova on Friday.
