A Heart Attack Leads to Purchasing a LS-Swapped Pick-Up Truck for A Bucket List Sick Week Appearance

Sometimes, there are good things that come from a serious medical condition; we can learn just how valuable time is.

In the case of Kevin Dunn, his medical scare three years ago kicked his bucket list choice into high gear for a Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive appearance in 2024.

“I had a major heart attack three years ago almost to the day of Sick Week,” said Kevin. “I only wanted one bucket list item; in case it happens again. We are getting this chance.”

Kevin discovered this 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up on Facebook Marketplace, and made the deal to acquire it. “Fellow even took two grand off the price when I told him why I wanted it,” Kevin said. “Correct motor, transmission, and style of vehicle.”

The S-10, known as ‘Slammer Shop’ like Kevin’s food truck, packs a 364 cubic inch LS swap, along with a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, 8.8-inch rear end and no power adders.

“We did Sick Ward last year and loved it,” Kevin admitted. “Made a commitment to race this year so I bought this fresh build, and we are in!”

Kevin didn’t have much driving experience on the truck, nor much racing experience, when he rolled into the water box on day one at Sick Week’s first stop at Orlando ‘Sick World’ Dragway.

A 14.35 at 102 mph started his week, but he completed the week with a 13.89 average, and a best pass of 13.24 at 108 mph on the final day.

When asked if he might do another drag-and-drive in 2024, Kevin responded “I would like to do something, but I own a business, a food truck with racing theme in Saint Petersburg, Florida, and time is valuable. Sick Week is the best, but would like to do Hot Rod Power Tour too.”
