Death Week Enjoys Some California Sea and Sun, As the Tour Gets Closer to a Third Track Visit
The second dedicated drive day for Death Week brought the tour close to shoreline once again, then through some narrow and twisting roads, and finally wide-open landscapes as day four was moved to the ‘completed’ side of the ledger.
To get to the first of three checkpoints of the day, participants rolled just a shade under 82 miles northwest to Morro Rock in Morro Bay, California.
Standing 576 feet high and surrounded by cool water, Morro Rock became a state landmark in 1968.
While it provided for an awesome backdrop for Death Week competitors, many found the wildlife was interested in the rides as well. Out in force were otters, squirrels and even seals.

After several dined in Morro Bay on the wide selection of available seafood from several restaurants, the road was calling, and stop number two was merely an hour away.
The James Dean Memorial awaited cruisers off the California 46 highway, and we got a group of them together for a shot in the afternoon sun.
A little over 92 miles separated Death Weekers from the final stop of the day: Cool Hand Luke’s Steakhouse in Clovis, California. Many chose to dine at the final checkpoint, and some even did some parking lot wrenching to end their evening.
With day four of Death Week, participants now have some choices to make. Wednesday marks our third track day, but how to get there is in the hands of each enthusiast!
With no set route, travelers can take the ‘quick-and-easy’ way of just over two hours to Famoso Drag Strip, taking California 99 South most of the way.
But the Sequoia National Forest is also available, either as a full tour with big elevation changes up to 7000 feet, as well winding roads, or as a quick glance at the Grant Grove Village and then motor south on the 245.
With racing action scheduled to start at 5 pm, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the drive, no matter which road is taken.
Famoso Drag Strip in Bakersfield, California awaits us today on day five of Death Week. Want to join us? Racing starts at 5 pm, and spectators are welcome to attend!
