Brian Lohnes Drops Epic Drag-and-Drive History Podcast

Brian Lohnes is well known around the nation as the commentator for NHRA Drag Racing on Fox, but what many of his more recent fans may not know is that he is a huge drag-and-drive nerd.

Lohnes has been at almost every Hot Rod Drag Week and has a huge passion for this segment of the sport, which is what led him to investigate its origins as part of a new podcast in his Dork-O-Motive series.

With support from Sick The Mag to make the episode happen, Lohnes dives into the story of the 1992 Hot Rod Magazine Fastest Street Car Shootout, when a collection of the fastest street cars in America gathered for a showdown in Memphis, Tennessee. The reverberations of this event are still being felt today as it helped to rocket the movement of "fast street cars" into the hot rodding stratosphere. This is the story of that event, as told by the editors, racers, and fans that were there.

Some of the guests on this show remember the race fondly, some with regret, and some, frankly, with their teeth gritted together, even 30 years later. It is a story about an event that changed the course of drag racing, changed the course of lives, and ultimately created things like Drag Week, Sick Week, Rocky Mountain Race Week, and the entire genre of drag-and-drive competition.

“I think you will love the story telling by those that created the event, those that raced in it, and those that were on the grounds to witness what everyone felt was the true launch of something big,” said Lohnes. “It's truly a unique thing to hear all these voices 30 years after the fact. This was a race that launched careers, changed lives, and made household hot rodding names out of some really awesome racers who were living in the shadows.”
