The Goldstone & Garrett Show Leads Sick Summer, Racers Take Over Rock Falls

Bryant Goldstone and Garrett Mitchell (AKA Cleetus McFarland) turned in uber-quick six-second runs on the opening day of Motion Raceworks Sick Summer at Byron Dragway to lead their classes and the overall chase.

Goldstone’s Unlimited Iron-class AMC Javelin delivered its best run of all time, a commanding 6.406 personal best at 225mph. Goldstone was one-and-done and able to get on the road early for the short drive to Cordova Dragway.

Mitchell’s opening session 6.682/220mph in the ‘Mullet’ El Camino impressed the fans, but he decided to see if the start line could take any more power on a second pass. Tire spin ended the run early, but Mitchell was still able to be packed up and leaving Byron Dragway shortly after midday.

It seemed being a Taylor was problematic for day one of Sick Summer. Alex Taylor took three runs to finally get a 7.232 on the board, giving up a lot of time to Goldstone in the Unlimited Iron class. Her finace Nick Taylor’s event is over after his ‘Uncle Sam’ Camaro (above) blew the motor, sending Nick on a wild ride that almost saw the car get into the wall. Fortunately Nick saved the car, but the engine is toast.

Doug Cook might have changed the game in Super Street with a stunning 7.042/206mph pass from the Motion Raceworks Nova. After a 7.2 pass in the morning, Cook felt confident enough to shoot for a number despite the afternoon heat and was rewarded with a much-improved time slip. Also in Super Street, David Diehl finally conquered the track with a 7.207/195mph from his Mustang.

Alan Whitaker was first out on track for the day to take advantage of the Total Venue Concepts track prep, throwing down a 7.246/200mph to lead Heavy Metal.

Tom McGilton leads Pro Street following a 7.393/193mph in the Proline-powered Camaro, with Evan Uerkwitz and Michael Swindoll hoping to chase him down.

Bryan Crane is hoping to go one better in the Stick Shift class at Motion Raceworks Sick Summer after second place last year and an 8.620 was a great start in the Mustang.

Ken Cuttle Jr leads Naturally Aspirated with a 9.455. With a few of the heavy hitters missing in action, consistent mid-nines could bring home an orange helmet.

Nathan McMaster kept the tiny 235 tires hooked in Rowdy Radial with a 5.191 to lead the class, while Trevor Branden has Sick Week Freaks under control with an 8.451 from the Nissan GTR (above).

We could have an interesting battle brewing in Gassers vs Hot Rods vs Beetles with Wayne Baker’s 9.089 only just leading Mark Fisher’s 9.108.

Matthew Frederick handed in an 8.504 pass for the lead of Street Race 275, while Cameron Alley’s 8.511 holds number one in Sick Street Race.

The Pro DYO and DYO classes will take shape later in the week, but for now the quickest passes have been made by Josh Lester (9.031) and Tyler Strub (10.010) respectively.

After racing finished, the field of over 300 competitors made their way to the Rock Falls Block Party, where the town closed streets and even set up a burnout pad. Thousands of people enjoyed the show as horsepower took over Rock Falls!

Of course, this is a drag-and-drive, and moving on would not be so simple for everyone. Nick Cryer is likely pulling the motor from the Divco truck as we write this, while Aaron Gierke needed to send out for repairs after torching the head on his Ford Ranger. From spider gears to broken motor tears, the Byron Dragway pits will have a few souls working late into tonight to stay in the race.

Now, this is just a very quick wrap of what went down. Want to get the gritty details? Subscribe to Sick The Magazine so you get our next issue with the full Sick Summer report!

Day two of Motion Raceworks Sick Summer will take place at Cordova Dragway on Tuesday, June 11 with racing from 9am. You can look at the full results from Motion Raceworks Sick Summer here.
