Sick Week 2022 In Review: Georgia On Our Minds For Day 4

As we look back at the first-ever Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive in 2022, we’re past the halfway point as the drive headed to the northern-most point of the week.

Day four sent hundreds of enthusiasts to South Georgia Motorsports Park, an all-concrete-racing track that has produced dozens of records from the drag radial and heads-up racing world. It didn’t take long to deliver some stellar performances.

The Unlimited class continued to be led by Stefan Gustafsson, who clocked his second-quickest pass of the week 6.68 at 219 mph. But Nick Taylor stepped up with his first 6-second pass in his newly-finished Camaro, lighting the boards with a 6.98 at 197 mph. Joe Barry also clocked his quickest pass of the week with a 7.10 at 201 mph.

Incoming Unlimited Iron leader Steve Morris slowed to an 11.77 pass with problems, and that gave Shawn Fink the lead with a 7.03 at 197 mph blast.

Rick Prospero and Mikael Borggren, the two quickest drag radial-equipped cars, both delivered 6-second passes at SGMP. But this time, Borggren got the quicker pass via a 6.85 to Prospero’s 6.92, with both cars once again eclipsing 200 mph. The math on Borggren’s improved performance moved their averages to less than one hundredth of-a-second apart, with Prospero in the lead.

Royce Payton’s 1966 Mustang clocked an 8.30 at a coasting 130mph pass to stay in the top ten standings of the Unlimited Iron class.

Glenn Hunter strengthened his lead in the Pro Street class, Richard Guido would continue to lead the Stick Shift class, and Doc McEntire would clock his first 7-second pass of the week, a 7.88 at 167 mph, to lead the Naturally Aspirated class.

Edward Schwarz’s turbocharged ‘72 Chevrolet Nova went wheels up in route to an 8.77 pass and stay in the top ten of the Street Race class.

The longest drive of the week faced the drivers after action was capped for the day at SGMP. But the halfway point to Bradenton Motorsports Park would find the entrants at “Big Daddy” Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum for the evening.
