PEAK Street Car Shootout + Nitro Means Awesome NHRA Event at Chicago!

The Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance at Chicago’s Route 66 Raceway will feature America’s quickest real street cars as part of the inaugural PEAK Street Car Shootout.

This eight-car invitational will showcase a broad range of street cars from the world of drag-and-drive, a segment of drag racing that is proving immensely popular with the grass roots of the sport. Essentially, a drag-and-drive event requires competitors to race their street legal cars at one track before driving to another, often hundreds of miles away — all without the support of a transporter or a large team. This is a true test of street car engineering, with the adventures of these racers becoming legendary.

On show in Chicago will be the world’s quickest street car, Tom Bailey’s Sick Seconds 2.0 Camaro, Alex Taylor’s six-second ’55 Chevy, Steve Morris’ SMX-powered ‘Boostmaster’ wagon, Bryant Goldstone’s flying six-second Javelin, Clark Rosenstengel’s heavyweight 200mph Camaro, former Major League Baseball pitcher Clint Sodowsky’s seven-second Pro Street Camaro, Rick Trunkett’s factory appearing but savagely fast ’72 Duster, and Bob Hess Jr’s unique Hemi-powered Fox body Mustang.

For Bailey, it will be his first time back racing at an NHRA event since 2.0’s fire back at the 2021 Gatornationals. Reflecting on that time, Bailey said the drag-and-drive scene has changed rapidly.

“Two years doesn’t sound like a lot for a whole new area of the sport to bloom, but that’s what we have seen with drag-and-drive,” he said. “Shortly after the fire, we started Sick The Magazine to cover what was basically only four major events at the time. Now, there’s close to a dozen week-long events around the country, with probably a couple of dozen smaller two and three-day events, not to mention the events that are taking place around the world in Canada, Sweden, Australia and the UK.”

Spectators at Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance are invited to come into the pits and check out the PEAK Street Car Shootout’s competitors up close to learn more about drag-and-drive.

“One thing about drag-and-drive is that we don’t often race with our transporters right there! We’re used to towing everything we need in a small trailer behind the car. We’d love anyone interested in drag-and-drive to come and ask questions and find out more about what we do.

“The great thing about drag-and-drive is that there are very few barriers to entry. You can have a great adventure in a 13 or 14-second car. You might be driving through the Rocky Mountains or alongside the beach in Florida, all while being followed by a 3000hp Pro Mod! There’s a spirit of camaraderie you don’t find anywhere else in motorsport.”

The Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance will be a spectacular event, featuring not just the nitro-burning Top Fuel and Funny Car classes, but also a Top Fuel Motorcycle exhibition. One thing is for sure — NHRA’s return to Chicago is not to be missed!
