NMCA Season Opener Rounds Up Three Straight Weeks of Pro Mod Racing in Florida
The cars that are some ways resemble the Hot Wheels you may have owned as a kid, the Pro Mod class enjoyed its third straight weekend of racing in Florida.
First it was the Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod at Bradenton Motorsports Park at the beginning of the month, followed by NHRA’s season opening event at Gainesville Raceway. Less than 24 hours ago, the Xtreme Pro Mod class was contested and completed during the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) season-opening event at Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida.
Pro Mod is truly a class for the senses. The smell of either race fuel or methanol (alcohol), the volume level of the engines, and lately the variety of different models of cars used.
At the NMCA event, the Xtreme Pro Mod class was packed with several different makes and models. Some of the unique rides included a 1957 Buick, a 1949 Mercury, a 1967 Ford Mustang, and a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette.

In my opinion – this is what drag racing needs. A class that is easily identifiable across several platforms, has a variety of different cars, and some great performances.
The NMCA, running the eighth-mile format that put the class-leading cars into the 3.6-second range at over 200 mph, featured some great performances over four rounds of competition.
In the final round, the number one qualifier Robert Abbott would stage his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro against Ty Tutterow and his new 1957 Buick.
Both cars delivered 3.63-second passes in excess of 207 mph, but it was Tutterow getting a five-hundredths better reaction time, putting him in front for the win.
