Classic Looks and Big Block Power Combine in a Drag-and-Drive Proven 1968 Chevelle

With all the new technology and updates available in the performance and restoration market, it’s cool to see a build that sports old school looks and an engine bay to match.

Travis Chrystal’s 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle does all that and more, with a pair of drag-and-drive events now completed in less than a year’s time.

Travis’ Chevelle sports some of the popular choices of the 1960s-1970s muscle cars, including Torq-Thrust style wheels, the yellow high beam lights, and the “stinger” scooped hood made popular by the Yenko and Baldwin-Motion tuner cars of the time.

It also sports a naturally aspirated 555 cubic inch big block engine that Travis assembled himself, backed by a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic from Bubba Ginn Racing Transmissions.

Debuting the Chevelle to drag-and-drive competition at the 2022 Summit Midwest Drags, Travis successfully completed the week and walked away with a third-place finish in his class.

Travis decided to hit up the 2023 edition of Sick Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive next. “I figured winter time racing in Florida is better than the weather in Wyoming,” said Travis.

Competing in the Sick Street Race class, Travis opened the week at Orlando ‘Sick’ World Dragway with his best pass of the week at 11.37 at 120 mph. Clocking four more passes in the mid 11-second range, Travis and his wife Lily completed the week with an 11.49 average.

“Sick Week was a great time,” said Travis. “It's 5 weekends of racing condensed into one week all at different tracks.”
